Opening Painter 12 in Mavericks

If you try to open Corel® Painter™ 12 after upgrading to a newer version of Mac (OS) X, including OS 10.9 Mavericks, you may receive an error indicating your serial number is invalid or Error 20 when launching. This issue is most likely caused by incorrect permissions created on key system folders during migration to a new version of Mac OS X causing issues with the activation of Painter 12. Corel has posted a couple of methods to get around this and here is one solution:

  1. Go to Spotlight (click on magnifying glass icon in upper right corner).
  2. Type in Terminal.
  3. Click on Top Hit Terminal.
  4. You’ll see a text box with some odd looking text. Select and copy the following command (the command is case sensitive):
    sudo /Applications/Corel\ Painter\ 12/Corel\ Painter\ 12.app/Contents/MacOS/Corel\ Painter\ 12
  5. Paste it into the Terminal text box (after all the existing text) and press enter. You can safely ignore the warning you see in the Terminal text box: “WARNING: Improper use of the sudo command could lead to data loss or the deletion of important system files. Please double-check your typing when using sudo. Type “man sudo” for more information.”
  6. Enter your user password for your Mac and press enter.
  7. Painter 12 should launch and may prompt you to re-enter your serial number and re-activate Painter 12. After this Painter 12 should launch fine every time.

If you are still using Painter 12, please note that Painter X3 is a great improvement over Painter 12 and is well worth the upgrade. I highly recommend that you upgrade from Painter 12 to Painter X3.

Cheers,

Jeremy
