You will learn the nitty gritty of iPad painting with the premier iPad art app Procreate. Jump start your creativity on the iPad! Learn from iPad painting master, Jeremy Sutton, the featured iPad artist at the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s “Innovation in Art” event, Washington, DC; who live painted on the iPad at the opening of the epic “David Hockney: Bigger Exhibition” at the de Young Museum, San Francisco; and who painted on stage up and down the east coast with Tommy Igoe and the Birdland All-Stars “Art of Jazz” 2018 tour. The workshop includes the following:
1. The Fundamentals – Creative Freedom from a Solid Foundation
2. Painting & Photography – Importing, Transforming and Using as Reference
3. Painting What You See – An Artistic Approach
4. Now What? – Saving, Sharing, Showing & Printing
The syllabus will include exploring the interface; starting new projects; creative workflow; understanding, exploring, controlling, customizing, organizing and managing brushes; choosing color; using layers, layer adjustment tools, layer blending modes and layer masks; using the selection and transform tools; recording and exporting time-lapse replay videos; saving, sharing, archive, back-up and output options.
Jeremy will also share some his custom Procreate brushes.
8×10 paper and 16×20 canvas prints included in the workshop fee.
10am – 5pm
The tuition fee is $1,200 for the three day class. The fee includes materials fee, print costs, class notes, and refreshments. There will be a pigment inkjet printer available for 8×10 prints on photo paper available during the class, plus a canvas print will be made for each student of an artwork they create during the class.
Small Class Size
There will be a maximum of ten students, so everyone will get individual attention and benefit from this action-packed workshop of digital art education. They will have fun and be inspired and stretched creatively. The small class size allows students to learn at their own pace.
Each student will need to bring a fully charged iPad with charging cables and plug adaptors. You will be emailed a complete list of recommended apps to install prior to the start of class. Meanwhile you can find a list of apps, plus stylus recommendations, on the iPad Art Tools page. If you have the iPad Pro then the Apple Pencil is a MUST!!! If you are considering purchasing an iPad then I absolutely recommend going for the latest iPad Pro / Apple Pencil combination!
Instructor Jeremy Sutton travels the world performing live iPad painting at private events and public institutions, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C., and the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. He has taught iPad art workshops and classes in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and at the Seoul Museum of Art, Korea.
More mobile art links
What about other mobile devices besides the iPad?
There is an ever growing list of excellent and powerful mobile art tools and devices. In my classes I teach practical lessons based on my own experience as a professional artist. You learn about the tools I use every day. In my case, the iPad is my main mobile art tool and that is why I am focusing on teaching with it.
Do I need any training or experience in drawing or painting?
No prior art experience is needed. The wonderful thing about making art on your iPad is that it is easily accessible to everyone! I teach with encouragement and enthusiasm. The class is fun with an emphasis on playing and exploring and taking risk on your digital canvas. All you need is an open mind and willingness to explore. Everyone can express themselves freely on the iPad and my class is aimed at empowering you in this with a solid understanding and mastery of the tools.
Accommodation Suggestions for Out of Town Visitors
Hotels in San Francisco have become very expensive in the last couple of years but here are a few downtown hotels to contact – sometimes they have reasonable deals – always ask for their best rates. Check to see how much they are on Expedia and then, before booking through Expedia, call the hotel directly and see if they’ll match the rate (you always have more flexibility if you book directly through the hotel rather than a third party like Expedia).
The Marker Hotel (formerly Monaco Hotel)
Hotel Beresford (above English style pub)
If you are not familiar with San Francisco please feel free to run any hotel suggestions by me before booking.
You can also see what is available on airbnb. Please feel free to ask my opinion before you commit to a booking – as with hotels I can advise you whether it is in a neighborhood I’d recommend or not. Please note that airbnb cancellation and change terms are frequently more restrictive than booking a regular hotel room, and their prices sometimes not that much different – see what is available in hotels first.
Please note that, like all of Jeremy’s classes and workshops, this workshop is covered by the PaintboxTV Terms and Conditions which includes: “All purchases, including all registrations for workshops and classes, are FINAL and are NON-REFUNDABLE. If a user changes their mind, or is for any reason unable to attend a class or workshop they registered for, and can give more the seven days notice before a class starts, then the value of the registration payment can be applied to a later class or workshop or any other product or service offered on PaintboxTV®.”
