Please note that this custom workspace is expressly designed for use with Corel Painter 2023. My JS Painter 2023 Workspace includes extra brushes, many of them the classic Jeremy Faves extra brushes; a new simplified JS Foundation layout; a new compact Jeremy’s Handy Shortcuts custom palette, plus extra art materials (papers, patterns, flow maps and nozzles).
To install this workspace open Corel Painter 2023 on your computer. Then find the file you have downloaded (JS_Painter_2023_Workspace.pws.zip) and unzip it (extract on PC). The .pws extension may not be visible on a PC. Copy, drag or send (right click / extract on a PC) the file from the Downloads folder to the Desktop. If Painter 2023 is already open on your system, you can double click on this file. Alternatively you can import the workspace from within Painter 2023 by choosing Window / Workspace / Import and locate the workspace file on your Desktop. You’ll see within Painter 2023 a message that says “Switching workspaces” as it installs the new workspace.
Customize your Palette Layout
Once you have successfully imported my JS Painter 2023 Workspace, the first layout of palettes you’ll see is the JS Foundation layout. Move the Jeremy’s Handy Shortcuts custom palette to the lower left corner of your screen and the Color and Layers palette drawer to the upper right, as shown above. My default JS Foundation palette layout is a “one size fits all” solution to accommodate all screen resolutions of users of my workspace (and therefore has everything compressed into the upper left to be safe). I recommend you move palettes to the positions that best suits your display and workflow.
Once you’ve done that please choose Window / Layout / Save Layout. Name the layout JS Foundation and choose Yes when asked if you wish to replace the existing palette layout of the same name. This will now be your “go to” layout for starting off a project. Anytime you need to tidy up your palettes you can just choose the JS Foundation layout.
The Difference Between a “Workspace” and “Layout” in Painter
A workspace in Corel Painter encapsulates everything in the program that is customizable, including palette arrangements, extra brushes and brush categories, extra art material content and libraries, the preferences, the color settings, the brush calibrations, and so on. One common misconception is that a workspace is the same as a palette layout, i.e. what you see on your screen. It is not. It is much much more than that. To change a palette layout go to the Window / Layout, not to Window / Workspace. The advantage of installing a custom workspace like the one I have prepared for you here is that you get in one fell swoop my entire customization and enhancement of your Painter experience based on my almost 30 years of experience using Painter (since version 1), and including my favorite extra brushes, some of which I have brought forward version by version from the earliest versions of Painter. I suggest once you’re in a workspace you simply adapt it and make it suit your own style and workflow. Create your own custom palette layouts, custom palettes, palette drawers etc. At any time you can choose Window / Workspace / New Workspace to preserve the current state of the workspace with any changes you’ve made, and then Window / Workspace / Export Workspace to export the new workspace pws file to anywhere on your computer or an external hard drive. The exported workspace file acts like a “snapshot” of the current state of the workspace. If you customize the workspace quite a bit and add more brushes and brush categories, then it’s a good idea to back up the workspace in that manner from time to time.
Mixer Pads
Please click here to download JS Mixer Pads (3 MB approx.). These are JPGs of palettes and colored imagery that you can upload into the Mixer via the Open Mixer Pad panel pop-up menu option.
Masters Gallery
Please click here to download the Masters Gallery (164 MB approx.). The low resolution inspirational images in this gallery are intended for visual reference only. They can be opened in the Reference Image panel (Open Reference Image) and Mixer panel (Mixer panel menu / Open Mixer Pad) and you can then pick colors from them. You could also use them to generate color sets (open image in Painter 2021 and then choose Color Set Libraries panel menu / New Color Set from Image). The copyrights belong to the original copyright holders.
Wacom Preferences
I recommend you regularly check for updated Wacom drivers (go to Updates in the Wacom Desktop Center). Then in the Wacom Tablet Control panel (Apple Menu / Systems Preferences / Wacom on a Mac, search in Start Menu for Wacom on a PC) I start by setting the Tool / Functions / Grip Pen and Art Pen two-function button with the lower button (nearest pen tip) set to Modifier / Opt+Cmd (Mac) / Alt+Ctrl (PC) which is the shortcut for changing brush size as you paint, and the upper button (furthest from pen tip) set to Control (Mac) or Right Click (PC) which is the shortcut for accessing a pop-up menu with the current brush category variants. After doing that go to the Tool / Functions / ExpressKeys, set the Application choice to be the Painter icon (very important to remember to do this or the shortcuts won’t work in Painter) and then set the following ExpressKeys:

Then I set all the Tool / Functions / Touch Ring options to be Auto Scroll / Zoom. I disable Touch Options (in Control Panel / Tool: Touch for older Intuos Pro pen tablets and via a small toggle switch on side of newest Intuos Pro models).

To import these extra brushes first unzip the downloaded files. If you are on Windows PC I recommend copying the zipped files onto your desktop. Then, from within Painter 2021, select Brushes / Import / Category and click on the files. The new categories will appear at the bottom of the brush category list in the brush selector panel. You can drag the categories one by one up from the bottom to anywhere in the category list. Enjoy the brushes!!
