Portrait Sketching from Life is a three session workshop. A portrait model will be present during the three sessions. You will learn techniques and artistic strategies for drawing and painting a portrait from life. The three sessions are each spaced apart by a month to give time to practice and review.

Session #1: FORM
Monday, December 10, 2018 9:00 AM – Midday

Session #2: COLOR
Monday, January 14, 2019 9:00 AM – Midday

Session #3: MIXED MEDIA
Monday, February 11, 2019 9:00 AM – Midday

Each session will focus on the topic outlined above and will include live demos by myself as well as hands-on painting time when you will be painting directly from observation of the model.

What You’ll Learn

  • How to light and position your portrait subject;

  • How to compose your portrait on the canvas and build up form through the foundation of shape and tone;

  • How to paint specific facial features and forms;

  • How to employ both realistic and expressive color; and

  • How to use texture and mixed media to add even more life to your portraits.

Who This Workshop is For

This workshop is for anyone who wishes to learn an expressive creative approach to sketching and painting portraits from direct observation. Whether you are a hobbyist or a professional, retired or working, a fine artist, illustrator, designer, or simply ready to explore and develop your creativity, this class will provide you with a solid foundation and skill-set from which to grow and develop, plus a huge dose of creative excitement, energy and enthusiasm!

The material covered will include intermediate to advanced level topics, as well as the fundamentals.

You do not need to have any formal art training or art background, or know how to paint or draw, to take this workshop. Naturally if you do have art training and experience that will reflect in how you use the tools and what you create. No matter what your background, in this class you will enjoy an unforgettable educational and inspiring experience that will bring you pleasure for years to come.

Preparation & Requirements

This is a hands-on workshop in which you will work with your own computer (Mac or PC) and a Wacom pen-tablet (Intuos Pro series recommended). You’ll be expected to be familiar with how to use your computer and have some experience within Corel Painter. Please ensure you have the latest version of Corel Painter and the latest Wacom driver installed and working. I recommend that you program your Wacom tablet Express Keys as per my guide (see Painter Extras), and have imported my latest Painter workspace from PaintboxTV (also see Painter Extras), ahead of arriving in class. You will also need a digital camera and a means to get your digital images from your camera to your computer hard drive. As mentioned above, no prior art experience is needed.

Small Class Size Combined with Effective and Engaging Teaching

This class will be limited to a maximum of six students. The small class size ensures every student receives individual one-on-one attention. My teaching style is practical, down-to-earth, engaging, organized and rooted in what works for me in my own professional art practice. I believe in building solid foundations and teaching from the ground up. This workshop is a wonderful opportunity for you to stretch yourself creatively on every level.

Accommodation Suggestions for Out of Town Visitors

Here are a few downtown hotels to contact. Always ask for their best rates – sometimes they have special rates and discounts. Also I recommend checking to see how much they are on Expedia and then, before booking through Expedia, call the hotel directly and see if they’ll match the rate (you always have more flexibility if you book directly through the hotel rather than a third party like Expedia).

Hotel Rex (great 1920s style lounge)

The Marker Hotel (formerly Monaco Hotel)

Hotel Beresford (above English style pub)

Villa Florence

Sir Francis Drake

Sheraton Palace

Hotel Griffon

Hotel Whitcomb

If you are not familiar with San Francisco please feel free to run any hotel suggestions by me before booking.

You can also see what is available on airbnb. Please feel free to ask my opinion before you commit to a booking – as with hotels I can advise you whether it is in a neighborhood I’d recommend or not. Please note that airbnb cancellation and change terms are frequently much more restrictive than booking a regular hotel room, and their prices sometimes not that much different – so I would suggest always seeing what is available in hotels first.
