The Journey

    Wednesday, January 17th
DAY 2 – COLLAGE TECHNIQUE WITH COREL PAINTER 2018

A day immersed painting in Corel Painter 2018, developing and working with ideas and photos from the Day 1 field trip and digging into Corel Painter 2018’s amazing power as a digital collage tool. Boldly explore the varied mark-making and rich textural possibilities of Painter’s amazing brushes, customizing them as needed. Stretch your use, and deepen your understanding, of Papers, Impasto, Dab Stencils, Textures and Thick Paint. Experiment with dynamic color combinations and the photo-compositing possibilities of playing with reference layers, composite methods and layer masks.

    Thursday, January 18th
DAY 3 – MIXED MEDIA ON CANVAS

This is the day for completely erasing the rules! You’ll be working on a pigment inkjet canvas print of the digital artwork you created the previous day. Anything goes. Now is time to experiment and explore and push the boundaries with acrylic mediums, glazing, paint, and varnish, plus attaching and glueing objects and documents onto your canvas print.

Who This Workshop is For

This workshop is for anyone who wishes to push themselves creatively, to paint outside the box, to learn an expressive creative approach to painting and photo-compositing on the digital canvas with Corel Painter 2018 as well as working into and onto the digital print. The material covered will range from fundamentals to advanced level topics. The small class size means that a relative newcomer to Painter will still gain a lot, while I will ensure there is sufficiently advanced and challenging material for the more advanced Painter user also. Whether you are a professional or amateur photographer, a fine artist, illustrator, designer, or simply ready to explore, expand and develop your creativity in digital and mixed media paint, this class will provide you with a solid foundation and skill-set from which to grow and develop, plus a huge dose of creative excitement, energy and enthusiasm!

The studio venue for the last two days of this workshop is Jeremy Sutton Studios, 1890 Bryant Street, Studio 306, San Francisco, CA 94110.

How to Prepare & What to Bring

This is a hands-on workshop in which you will work with your own computer (Mac or PC) and a Wacom pen-tablet (Intuos Pro or Cintiq recommended). You’ll be expected to be familiar with how to use your computer and have some experience within Corel Painter 2018. Please ensure you have the latest version of Corel Painter 2018 and the latest Wacom driver installed and working. Basic familiarity with Corel Painter 2018 is recommended. Please ensure you have imported my latest Painter workspace from PaintboxTV (Painter Extras), ahead of arriving in class. You will also need a digital camera and a means to get your digital images from your camera to your computer hard drive. As mentioned above, no prior art experience is needed.

You do not need to have any formal art training or art background, or know how to paint or draw, to take this workshop. Naturally if you do have art training and experience that will reflect in how you use the tools and what you create. I encourage all my students to take traditional drawing classes since this helps train your eye as an artist and empowers you in every aspect of image making. However such training is not required. No matter what your background, in this class you will enjoy an unforgettable educational and inspiring experience that will bring you pleasure for years to come.

Small Class Size

This class will be limited to a maximum of six students. The small class size ensures every student receives individual one-on-one attention. Teaching and field trip facilitation will be shared between myself, Jeremy, and fellow artist Peggy Gyulai.

Accommodation Suggestions for Out of Town Visitors

Here are a few downtown hotels to consider. They are mostly about ten minutes cab ride from my studio. Always ask for their best rates – sometimes they have special rates and discounts. Also I recommend checking to see how much they are on Expedia and then, before booking through Expedia, call the hotel directly and see if they’ll match the rate (you always have more flexibility if you book directly through the hotel rather than a third party like Expedia, and many hotels now will match online pricing). I recommend also first seeing what is available when booking through the app HotelTonight – they have great rooms at great deals – and then seeing if the hotels will match the rates online (they often will). You’ll get more flexibility booking directly through the hotels rather than third parties. If you do book through HotelTonight try the coupon code JESUTTON6 which may get $25 off your booking.

Hotel Rex (great 1920s style lounge)

Hotel Griffon (great location opposite the Ferry Building – try to get a room with a view looking out at the Bay Bridge)

The Marker Hotel (formerly Monaco Hotel)

Hotel Beresford (above English style pub)

Villa Florence (on busy street near Union Square)

Sir Francis Drake (bustling, near Union Square, with it’s own London-style Beefeater doormen)

Sheraton Palace (grand old classic)

If you are not familiar with San Francisco please feel free to ask my opinion before you commit to a booking – I can advise you whether it is in a neighborhood I’d recommend or not. Please note that airbnb cancellation and change terms are frequently much more restrictive than booking a regular hotel room, and their prices sometimes not that much different – so I would suggest always seeing what is available in hotels first.
